Grow your own flowers, vegetables and herbs in your backyard! The garden itself can be built within an afternoon (including the trip to the hardware store)! Even the Obama’s have their own garden now, and you can too (even with a small back yard like ours).

This simple to build 4’ x 8’ garden is an excellent choice for teaching your kids how easy it is to grow your own organic strawberries or other goodies. At the time, it was my 3-year old daughter with whom I read a book in which kids were planting seeds, watering the seeds and then picked delicious strawberries. That night, the discussion before falling asleep was about building our own vegetable garden the next morning. So we did!

There is nothing more rewarding then picking your own herbs and veggies! By the way, don’t think your children will be more likely to eat the veggies afterwards. That’s just an illusion...!
Now to the instructions:
1. Find a 4’ x 8’ sunny spot in your backyard
2. Clear the area. If needed dig out the grass.
3. Run to the hardware store an get the material (see box on the right)
Note: You will pay for 3 boards of 8 feet length, but you will have them cut one board in half. You will leave the store with 4 boards, 2 of 8’ length and 2 of 4’ length.
4. Drill 2 holes on each side of the 4’ long board (see photo)
Note: if you have the tool to sink the holes do so, if not plain holes are just fine too.

5. Use the lag screws to attach the 4’ boards to the face of the 8’ boards. Start with a hammer and drive the lag screws halfway in. With a wrench finish the tying up of the boards.
6. All done.
All you need now is compost. Most cities that collect green materials offer free or very inexpensive compost. Call your city hall and find out.
