Impact

Advancing Indigenous Peoples' guardianship globally

When Indigenous Peoples have the self-determination and resources to protect their territories, our whole planet thrives.

Too often, this is not the case. Indigenous People face constant attacks on their way of life, and sometimes their very lives.

Since Nia Tero’s inception, we have provided more than $125 million in grants directly to Indigenous Peoples and their trusted allies to continue caring for the places they call home.

The impact is clear, with our Indigenous partners noting that guardianship is strong or strengthening in 90% of their territories. In addition, on average, tree loss is 400% higher outside of our partners' lands and waters.

Why Indigenous Peoples' guardianship?

25% of our planet's lands and waters

are cared for by Indigenous Peoples

40% of our planet's healthiest ecosystems

are on Indigenous lands

Yet less than 1%

of global climate funding goes to Indigenous Peoples

Our partnership with Nia Tero enabled Univaja, which was previously a small and little-known organization, to become the organization we are today, with national and international prominence, including recognition through awards such as the Equator Prize.
