Indigenous Organizations Petition EMRIP to Address Human Rights Issues in Colombia
As part of petition process within the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), Indigenous organizations in Colombia have submitted a paper for consideration by the U.N. Human Rights Council ahead of its September review. The paper has been submitted in collaboration with IWGIA and Nia Tero.
It highlights the human rights concerns of Indigenous Peoples in Colombia – many of which are experienced by Indigenous Peoples worldwide.
The paper proposes pathways and recommendations toward dialogue and resolution.

What is the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples?
EMRIP is one of four mechanisms within the United Nations for Indigenous Peoples. It operates within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. EMRIP provides the Human Rights Council with recommendations in consultation with Indigenous Peoples. It also assists Member States with meeting the goals of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This mechanism convenes at the U.N. in Geneva, Switzerland annually. The other mechanisms include the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, the U.N. Special Rapporteur for Indigenous Peoples and the U.N. Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples.
