Side Event Details:

This side event will feature a panel discussion and Q&A session on the Mala I Tolo initiative, an Indigenous guardianship policy platform on safeguarding the Indigenous highlands territories of the Malaita Province within Solomon Islands.

The Mala I Tolo Initiative Declaration committed the province of Malaita to a moratorium on any industrial logging or mining in the highlands of Malaita, which are the sacred center of culture and identity for the 11 language groups of the island.

This side event will present the educational initiative for Indigenous youth that has now grown out of the declaration and is creating a new workforce for the “economy of intactness” that Malaita is pursuing.
